Who are we?
Which path are we on?
We were all in a cramped little room, waiting for free healthcare service. A very tall, stocky lady sitting next to me caught my eye.I noticed that she had slanted, perceptive eyes. I asked her if she was of Peruvian or Chilean descent. As the conversation continued, she talked about her immense height and genetic condition, which was discovered by a medical researcher. “It’s a long story”, she said. And so she recounted her family’s epic in detail, starting with three generations before her.
She said that her great-great-grandparents had arrived in Brazil with six young children. Hungry, they decided to set off into the backlands, suffering the drought and the sun and surviving on hunting, fishing, the salt of the earth and crystal-clear water from underground wells. “And so they continued on their way, with only God and the dust of time”, she said.
I admired your narrative; it is poetic and full of details of this journey through time and space. I returned home thinking we are all walkers who continue “only with God and the dust of time”. And that’s so little and so much! We go out hunting for our primordial memories and fish, here and there, for the daily sustenance of our Spirit-starved souls. What drives us is that, by constantly feeding on everything our soul needs, we are always drawn to the search for the divine essence within us. He who never stops searching and walking wins. And the end of this journey “with God and the dust of time” is the most perfect transfiguration. This is how one day, completely transformed, we will become fully aware of our finitude and eternity – which will make us glorious beings, walking under the Light of God, even if we are still treading the dust of the earth.
